Warming Effects on Ecosystems

NEWS is the Network of Ecosystem Warming Studies made up of 32 research sites from high tundra (latitude or altitude), low tundra, grassland, and forest. Warming methods included electrical heat ground cables, greenhouses, vented and unvented field chambers, infrared heaters, and passive night-time warming. The results of a recent meta-analysis show that soil respiration rates increased by 20% (top panel), net N mineralization rates increased by 64% (bottom panel), and plant productivity increased by 27% [Rustad et al 2000; Shaver et al. 2000].
